Too much attention to privates?

Q: This is my first time having a male dog and it seems as if he licks his private part alot, well to me alot. I know he does after he urinates. But it seems like several other times thru out the day. I've looked closely and dont see any discharge, swelling or redness. I might be overacting but I dont know what to expect.

A: That can be a sign of irritation or infection in the sheath or even a symptom of urinary tract infection. If he is not straining to urinate or urinating very often you can just wait and mention it to your vet. Topical antibiotics such as neosporin can help if applied inside the sheath a couple times a day.
