Common Conditions

Itchy Puppy

Q: Daisy scratches a lot, seems like way too much. Her ears are better after two rounds of medications, but now the scratching is generalized. She scratches her head, her sides, bites herself on the tail area. She is only three months old. DOB 9-5-18. She has itched every day since we got her in November. Please advise us. Thanks. Janet Brooks
A: The most common cause of generalized itching in puppies is dryness usually associated with bathing. Using a mild pet shampoo like aloe and oatmeal and then applying a leave on conditioner. Giving her a fatty acid (omega 3s) is also beneficial but you have to use it continuously and it takes at least 3 weeks to see the benefit. Fleas are also a common cause of itching but you should be able to see those. Is there any rash?
