- A: First estrus usually occurs around 6 months depending on size, the smaller the female generally the sooner the heat. Initial signs include increased interest in that area, swelling of the external genitalia and the appearance of blood or blood tinged fluid. Typical duration is approximately 3 weeks but there is wide variation in actual length.
