Training Tips

Leash attacks

Q: My puppy has started biting his leash when we walk together. I try to get him to stop and he starts growling and biting it more even almost taking it out of my hand. Not sure when this became and game or how to get him to stop. I have even tried spraying the leash with bitters.
A: As with many unwanted habits they do seem to be about “the game”. To me the problem is the consequences of the action are not recognizable and rememberable enough for him to change. You have to step ir up. You could also switch to a leash that is less chewble like chain or coated wire but your response to his action is the most critical part.
