Biting more

Q: I have a 9 week old puppy who LOVES to bite/nip however in the last day or two when he gets riled up he becomes a little aggressive with his biting. What's the best way to stop him from doing this? I've tried detering him by putting toys in his mouth when he bites, I've squealed to make him think it hurts (which is does!) and I've given him a stern "no" but nothing seems to work. I want to stop this ASAP so it doesn't become a habit as he gets older.
A: The consequence of his biting is not rememberable and objectionable enough to get him to change, you have to step it up. Toy substitution rarely works in my experience. Go to the Forum and type “Biting” in the search box for discussion of this problem. Please let me know of any other questions.
