Crate vs Outdoors

Q: We started using the Puppy Pee Poo Palace when we got our dog at 8 weeks old and he was using it. He then transitioned to going outside and will even go to the door when he has to go. He is now a little over 12 weeks old. It seems like he can hold it, but it is hard to tell. I noticed he no longer goes in his palace. I am unsure if we should go to the playard and connect it to the cage or just eliminate this stage. I feel he needs more space, but I don't feel comfortable letting him roam around yet as he has had a few accidents and he is not going in the cage anymore.
A: You need to pick him from the cage and carry him outdoors rather than waiting for his signal. Waiting for him to let you know reliably is still a couple week away. The situation you describe would allow the use of an exercise pen but he will still want to interact with you, you have to teach him your routine by not giving in.
