Appearance

Cavapoos are beautiful, toy-sized dogs that enchant with cute puppy-dog looks and a fluffy tail that never stops wagging. As a mix between the sweet Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the fancy Poodle, the Cavapoo size and appearance may vary a bit. These little dogs can grow up to 9-14 inches tall and weigh between 8 and 20 pounds. Because they are half Poodle and half Cavalier spaniel, Cavapoo dogs can have straight, wavy, or curly hair texture.

Common features among all Cavapoos include a medium to short muzzle, dark round eyes, adorable floppy ears, a small dark nose, and a curled tail. Their build is compact, sturdy, and well-proportioned. Cavapoo coat coloring can include patterns and markings that resemble the Cavalier spaniel coat. The Cavapoo colors are most commonly combinations of or solid white, black, brown, and yellow.

Temperament

Cavapoos are darling little dogs that love everyone in sight. They are calm, gentle, and very passionate about interacting with humans and pets alike. Because their nature is caring and their personality playful, these sweet dogs fit well in a family with kids or a multi-pet household. They lack any sort of aggressive behavior, are neither jumpy nor shy, and remain composed through any situation.

Some of the Cavapoo’s favorite activities include going on long low-intensity walks, hiking, playing in the sand and snow, and solving treat puzzles. Although energy levels can differ from one puppy to another even in the same litter, Cavapoos are known to be on the more relaxed side. That being said, they are more than happy to adapt to a more adventurous environment.

Despite the unconditional puppy love they have for their human family, Cavapoo dogs are not considered clingy or overly attached. They are of an independent nature and as many Cavapoo owners can attest, these dogs don’t mind being alone for a few hours.

Care

Cavapoo Grooming

Although they are not a high-maintenance breed, Cavapoos do need frequent grooming. One quick brushing or combing every day is ideal to keep their beautiful coats matt and tangle-free. It is beneficial to wash these beautiful pooches every month, sooner if they need it, and trim their nails after every bath if they get too long. Their ears should be checked and cleaned regularly, and their teeth brushed preferably daily.

Cavapoo Exercise Needs

The Cavapoo is a small-sized moderately active dog breed that enjoys trips to the dog park, long walks, and relaxed evenings on the couch. One or two daily walks adding up to at least 30 minutes is enough to keep these dogs in their fit form and happy disposition.

Cavapoo Health

First-generation doodle breeds like the Cavapoo enjoy better health and longevity. Like all dogs, there are certain conditions that they may inherit or develop over time. Some of these include cataracts, hip dysplasia, certain allergies that are common in dogs, patellar luxation, and in some cases, epilepsy. Not all dogs develop any or all of these conditions, but as a caution, it is always best to stick to regular vet checks.

Cavapoo Life Span

The Cavapoo lifespan is between 12 and 15 years, although there have been reports of Cavapoos living well past 16 years. Never miss vet checkups, keep to a balanced diet, and make sure exercise needs are always met if you want to increase the Cavapoo life expectancy.

Cavapooo Training

Cavapoos are brilliant little puppies that learn quickly and love to impress. Training them should be a fun and entertaining task to look forward to. These smart puppies enjoy learning new tricks and games and are quite passionate about pleasing their owner. A gentle approach works best with Cavapoo puppies. Treats and praise will have the best results, while yelling or using punishments will have the opposite effect. Socializing these cute puppies should come naturally as Cavapoo dogs are very friendly to begin with. They should be introduced to various sounds and places early on to make sure they don’t grow shy later on. Although they are not known to be destructive when left alone at home, it is always best to plan ahead and train them to be independent.

History

The gorgeous Cavapoo puppies first appeared in Australia during the 1990s. Although the crossbreed may have occurred naturally over time, it was only at the beginning of the 90s that professional breeders began crossing a purebred Cavalier spaniel with a purebred Poodle in an attempt to create a new hypoallergenic hybrid.

Cavapoo puppies have known great popularity since their debut. Impressing with their keen intelligence and striking looks, these puppies were quick to rise to success in Australia, rapidly spreading to other countries as well. In just a handful of years, Cavapoo dogs proved to be remarkable therapy dogs, excellent athletes in sporting competitions, and most amazing companions. Although little else is known about their early days, we can take a quick look at some characteristics their parents are known for, in order to gain a better understanding of the designer Cavapoos.

Cavalier King Charles spaniels are an ancient breed by many accounts, having been around for many centuries. During the age of kings and queens, toy spaniels were the most popular dogs around, especially in England, their place of origin. One monarch in particular was completely taken in by the cute toy spaniels. King Charles I of the Royal House of England was so enchanted by the lovely dogs that he was hardly ever seen without them. Since those early days, spaniels of the toy variety impressed with their elegant looks and sweet personalities. Having been raised at royal courts and named after a king, these beautiful dogs still hold on to some royal traits.

Poodles, like their royal Cavalier friends, have been around since ancient times. Often recognized for their rich curly coats and fancy haircuts, these dogs have been represented in various artworks as glorious canines. Although they started out as fowl retrievers in Germany, Poodles are now considered one of the most versatile dog breeds on the planet. The have worked jobs in the military and in various circuses; they became fashion icons in Paris and Rome, and they proved to be quite popular in the canine show ring and sporting field. The Poodle size is divided into three variations – the Standard Poodle, which is the largest, the Miniature Poodle, and the Toy Poodle.
