Temperament
Havapoos are sweet, calm-tempered, and gentle dogs that display a very well-balanced behavior. Although they love attention just as much as any small dog does, they are not a clingy breed. Havapoos prefer the company of their owners but are just as good on their own when their humans arenât home. Â
Havapoos are among the friendliest dogs in Dogdom, being quite passionate about gathering as many friends as possible. In the 30 years theyâve been around, many Havapoo owners have reported that these little dogs thrive when they are surrounded by other pets, people, and children. Multi-pet households are ideal for them just as families with kids are. Â
Adaptability is another box these dogs proudly check. Unlike most dogs that are either active or relaxed, the Havapoo is a dog that can adapt to any type of lifestyle. Havapoos are passionate about taking hiking trips with their owners, chasing toys, and going for swims in the summertime, but they also love relaxing on a lap and cuddling in front of the TV just as much.Â
Care
Havapoo Grooming
Havapoos have a medium to long beautifully curled coat that requires little effort to keep in its gorgeous appearance. To keep your dogâs hair from getting tangled, it is recommended to brush it at least twice every week with a brush specifically designed for dogs. A bath using dog shampoo is recommended monthly, or more frequently if the dog requires it. If your Havapoo grows his/her nails long enough to scratch the floor, it is recommended to give them a clip. Overgrown nails can cause pain and discomfort. To clip your Havapooâs nails, you can opt to use a dog nail clipper at home or visit the groomer for professional care. It is also recommended to brush your Havapooâs teeth regularly to avoid tartar build-up and other dental issues. Â
Havapoo Exercise Needs
Despite their tiny size, Havapoos have plenty of energy to burn off. They are not an active breed per se, but they do love hikes, swims, and fun workouts. Ideally, these small dogs should spend up to an hour exercising each day. At least two daily walks are recommended to keep them healthy, sunny, and in their beautiful shape. Treat hunts and dog puzzles are also a great way to provide mental stimulation as much as physical exercise. Â
Havapoo Health
Havapoos are a long-lived doodle breed with great health records. These small, adorable dogs are not as prone to the same ailments as their parents suffer from. Although rarely, they may develop certain conditions like allergies, ear infections, obesity, and dental diseases.
Havapoo Lifespan
The Havapoo lifespan is between 12 and 15 years. Generally, the Havapoo life expectancy is closer to 15 years, although some live well over that limit. To ensure your dog lives a long and healthy life, it is important to keep to vet checks, provide your dog with good quality kibble, and plenty of exercise. Â
Havapoo Training
Havapoos are exceedingly bright young puppies. Given their natural intelligence and eagerness to please their owner, you will have no trouble teaching your little puppy all the fun tricks and commands you want. Havapoo puppies are part Havanese and part Poodle, which means they inherit big brains and are more intelligent than most dog breeds in the world. The best approach in training your Havapoo puppies is to be calm, gentle, and rewarding. These puppies love treats just as much as attention and will do their best to get both during training. It is best to teach them a command and practice it every day until you are sure they have mastered it. Â
Although neither Havapoo puppies nor Havapoo adult dogs suffer from separation anxiety, it is best to train them in this aspect as a precautionary measure. Provide your Havapoo puppy with fun toys and good treats and leave the room for a minute or two while he shows more interest in devouring the treats or playing with the toys rather than following you. Repeat this process several times a day all while increasing the time you spend outside of your puppyâs sight. This activity will help your Havapoo puppy to be comfortable on its own and grow up to be independent.Â
History
Havapoos are a gorgeous doodle breed that is bred by crossing two purebred dogs â the Havanese and the Poodle. Havapoo breeders began crossing these popular purebred dogs during the 90s as the demand for hypoallergenic designer dogs increased. The new Havapoo puppies began their climb to success the moment they were born. Having inherited qualities from both of their parents, these puppies impressed with a nature as sweet as their parents, keen intelligence, and a blend of stunning features from both parents. Their hypoallergenic qualities also made them increasingly popular among dog lovers who hadnât owned a pet until then because of possible allergic reactions. Â
The Poodle and the Havanese were selected for the Havapoo mix for a myriad of reasons among which are their winning personalities and loving nature. Poodles journeyed through centuries of history, winning over the favor of kings, queens, and even pharaohs, with their impressive portfolio of skills and qualities. Poodles are a very intelligent dog breed, ranking second in the top of smartest dogs. They are also champions in agility dog sports, performers in the circus, guide and service dogs, and fashion icons.
The Havanese, like their Poodle friends, have received great admiration from aristocratic families wherever they traveled. Like their Havapoo puppies, the Havanese are considered one of the friendliest dogs in the world of fur-babies. Their nature is kind, and they are a dog breed that loves dogs, cats, and humans alike.Â
The Havapoo puppies are currently one of the most popular small doodle breeds in the United States as well as in European countries and across Australia. Â
