Pug with Wrinkled Face

Appearance

If you're looking for a playful and approachable pup, the mini Pug is perfect for you. These small dogs are hardy and friendly, with a bouncy step and proud gait. Their dark masks, wrinkled faces, and curled tails make them uniquely adorable and you're sure to fall in love with their personality.

Pug puppies are lovable, cuddly dogs that make the perfect companions. The adorable Pugs have a big head and small body, a short face and big round eyes. They love human contact, and will only look to you for affection, so you'll never need to worry about going out of your way to show them how much you care.
The AKC recognizes two Pug colors: fawn Pug and black Pug; but they come in other colors too, like the white Pug or the Brindle Pug (brindle being one of the rarest colors out there).

Pugs are dog-shaped balls of cuteness. The cute black Pug comes in black and fawn colors, with either a sweet black mask, or with no mask at all. The Pug's head is rounded to the point where it looks like it has been squashed from all sides, which becomes more pronounced when one adds a delightful pair of button or rose ears.

The Pug is a small but tough breed of dog, standing between 10 and 11 inches in height and weighing between 14 and 25 pounds. The female Pug is a bit shorter and lighter than the male.

The Pug, a small dog with a wrinkly face and straight tail, is one of America's oldest dog breeds and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. The inaugural Pug Dog Club of America was formed in 1931 to improve the quality of breeding by restricting outside bloodlines.

Temperament

Pugs are amazing dogs that love their pet parents and human siblings. Pug puppies crave attention, but they're not needy, in fact, they'll pretty much give you as much affection as you'll ever need. The Pug temperament is very calm and charming. You can take them for a walk or a run every day, or just hang out at home with them, either way you're going to have an amazing time. One thing is for sure, these dogs are always going to be there for you.

Just like people, the adult Pug is a creature of habit. They like to stick to a routine and don't enjoy big changes, especially if it means being away from their people. The Pugs are happiest when they are surrounded by their human family and love showing off their goofy tricks and having fun. Some of their favorite activities include hanging out with their family, going on walks, playing at the park, and learning new tricks. The Pug baby also enjoys obedience competitions, agility courses, and rally trials.

Small, cheerful, and extremely loveable, Pugs are the best travel companions. They're about the size of a can of soda, so you can easily carry them around and they won't complain when you're taking them with you to work or wherever else you're going. They'll love every second they get to spend with you, especially if you pay them full attention while they try to sneakily grab your food.

Care

Pug Grooming

Brushing and bathing a Pug baby is quite easy. You'll need a dog brush, some dog shampoo and a towel. Brush his coat gently from skin to end, being sure to get every part of him covered. Then, simply rinse your Pug with clean water and dry him off. Make sure you choose an appropriately formulated product for a cute dog like him.

When you first bathe your Pug puppies it's important to prepare them for the upcoming experience. Take about ten minutes to gently blow-dry your Pug dog’s body before taking him into the tub. This will help loosen dirt and dander from your dog's skin and give you a lot more room to play with when you shampoo him. Use a high quality brush or comb to remove excess hair before getting him wet - it will come off much easier this way.

Dogs need proper nail care, too, like humans.  Dogs with long nails are uncomfortable, they don't run well on hard surfaces, and they track the sidewalk into your house when you let them inside. Trimming their nails helps give your Pug dog good traction.

Regular grooming is essential for keeping your Pug puppies healthy and happy. Groomers can clean teeth to prevent cavities, as well as de-mat / de-shed fur for better hygiene. If you're going to give your fur ball a thorough cleaning at home, then make sure you are using the right shampoo and conditioner to treat any skin conditions or infections.

Pug Exercise Needs

The Pug is not a lazy dog, he’s just a realist. They know they aren't the most athletic of dogs. They would rather cuddle with you on the couch than run around outside chasing a ball, but regardless they do need their exercise, meaning regular walks every once in a while. Two short walks a day should suffice in keeping your Pug perfectly happy and exercised.

Pug Health

Like all dogs, Pugs can be exposed to some health issues, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t a healthy, long-lived breed. Some problems that, although rare, can occur in the Pug dog include periodontal disease, ear infections, cataracts, obesity, and allergies. To ensure your dog lives a long, healthy, and happy life, regular checkups should be done at least every 3 months.

Pug Lifespan

Pug life expectancy is 12-15 years or 80 in human years. Although the Pug lifespan is 12-15 years, there are some Pugs like Snookie the Pug who lived to be 27 years old.

Pug Training

Pugs may be small, but their personality is huge. These dogs are easy to train, love attention, and are very intelligent. Pug puppies are also loyal and loving. One way to start training your Pug baby is to do it right when you bring him or her home. Don't wait to help your Pug become a well-behaved member of your family. Pugs should not be left alone for long periods of time and need early socialization and puppy training classes.

Teaching your cute Pugs to sit will teach them good behaviors. First, you want to get their attention by holding a tasty treat close to them. Next, place your hand above their head and say “sit.” If they do not respond, gently place your hand on their back and push down slightly while saying the command again. When they comply, reward them with the treat.

It's important to teach them the right way with positive reinforcement training. With this type of training, you reward good behavior with praise instead of focusing too much on correcting bad behavior. The best way to train your Pug is by using positive reinforcement; it will make them want to behave well. It's important not to punish or criticize them too much. When they do something good, make sure to praise them.

History

Pugs are the adorably wrinkly, little sweethearts of dogdom. They have never been more popular, and indeed, the demand for Pugs has been steadily rising over the last 2000 years. This is thanks to their charming blend of high-spirited mischief and intelligent determination. You can find them in art and literature, honored for their heroism; you can also find them as faithful friends, great companions and loyal family members.

Long before the reign of the Egyptian Pharaohs, there was the Chinese Empire. Atop the Great Wall, many rulers from all walks of life sat upon their thrones and reigned supreme. It was a time of peace and prosperity for all, including one of China's oldest and most beloved companions – Pug puppies, who accompanied the Emperor and Empress wherever they went.

Consider yourself lucky if you own a Pug, as they have historically been the most beloved and revered amongst all breeds of dogs. Tibetan monks, European royalty and Dutch traders alike have regarded the breed as nothing short of a treasure. They have also served as valuable assets to the House of Orange, Queen Victoria, and even the US military.

If you're looking for a laid-back dog that loves to have fun, the pug is a great choice. This breed is best matched with other happy-go-lucky breeds such as the poodle, Havanese, Maltese, Beagle, Labrador Retriever, and others. Two contented dogs are likely to get along and enjoy each other's company.

Known for their outgoing personalities and affectionate nature, Pugs have been chosen to be part of several mixed breeds.

The most popular mixed breeds that are half Pug include:

  • Frug - French Bull Dog Pug mix
  • Golden Retriever Pug mix
  • Jug - Jack Russell Terrier Pug mix
  • Puggle- Beagle Pug mix
  • Chug - Chihuahua Pug mix
