Appearance

Small, cute, and perfectly cuddly, the Cockapoo will charm you with its true canine beauty. As a Cocker spaniel Poodle mix, the Cockapoo breed embodies adorable features and traits from both of its parents. Cockapoo dogs are well-proportioned, hardy-built, and very fit. Despite their small and adorable looks, they possess great strength, speed, and agility, much like their parents.

The Cockapoo size can vary quite a bit as well, but should be in average of 10 to 15 inches tall with a weight of 12 to 25 pounds for a full-grown Cockapoo adult.

Because they are a hybrid breed, these beautiful dogs can inherit the long straight coat of their Cocker spaniel parent, the curly-haired coat of their Poodle parent, or a wavy mix of both. They can also appear with colors and patterns that are common in the Cocker spaniel breed, or sport a solid-colored coat much like their Poodle parent. Common Cockapoo colors include black, white, tan, red, sable, merle, beige, brown, and cream.

Temperament

The Cockapoo temperament is one of composure and calmness. Mixing a Cocker spaniel with a Poodle resulted in a most awesome new breed of dog that exhibits good nature and a winning personality on all fronts. Cockapoo dogs are friendly, sweet, and exceedingly kind. They are the dogs that everyone adores for their endearing behavior and lack of aggression.

When it comes to their owners, Cockapoos are all in. They are quick to bond and remain loyal to their owners throughout their lives. The one thing that these cute dogs aren’t fond of is being without their owners.

Kids and Cockapoos are a lovely match, just as lovely as the friendship between other pets and Cockapoos. Because they are part Poodle and part Cocker, these sweet doodles are not familiar with aggression or territorial behavior. They make friends quickly with other dogs and are known to share their toys happily.

Because both Poodles and Cockers are considered energetic dog breeds, you can expect your little Cockapoo to follow in their footsteps. Cockapoos thrive in a life of adventure. They are passionate about joining their pet parents on hikes, vacations, trips, and long walks. They are also athletic and quite good at games of Frisbee, dog football, and fetch. If you are fond of dog sports, you can enlist your Cockapoo in sports of agility, obedience, and rally, as these are their strong points.

Care

Cockapoo Grooming

Although they have luxurious, rich coats that are not only beautiful but also every climate-friendly, these gorgeous little dogs are a low-maintenance dog breed. Brushings is required weekly to keep your Cockapoo tangle-free and shining. Bathing them often is not necessary unless your dog gets particularly dirty, otherwise, these dogs need a bath every few months. Their nails should be clipped if they reach the point where they make noise as they press on the floor. Cleaning their ears and teeth is recommended on a weekly basis.

Cockapoo Exercise Needs

Cockapoos are energetic little dogs that like to stay active as much as possible. They enjoy long walks, hikes, runs, and a myriad of other activities they can do alongside their owners. The best daily routine for the Cockapoo dog consists of two or three walks and active playtimes indoors. Providing exercise for their minds is just as important as meeting their physical exercise needs. It is beneficial to supply your Cockapoo with games and interactive activities that can stimulate their brilliant minds.

Cockapoo Health

As a crossbreed between two purebred dogs, the Cockapoo puppies and Cockapoo adults enjoy excellent health. Although rare, there are certain conditions they may develop over time. These include allergies, ear infections, and dental issues. To ensure your Cockapoo remains healthy, it’s important to keep up with regular vet checks.

Cockapoo Lifespan

Cockapoos have a lifespan of 13 to 15 years, with some living well past the 15-year mark. To increase the Cockapoo life expectancy, it is always recommended to provide your Cockapoo pet with high quality dog food, a proper exercise routine, and a loving environment.

Cockapoo Training

As part Poodle and part Cocker Spaniel, Cockapoo puppies enjoy a most remarkable intelligence. They are very clever when it comes to learning complex tricks and they find basic commands to be quite easy. Training Cockapoo puppies is a breeze, as these little dogs are eager to please you and will do whatever it takes to get there. When training your little Cockapoo puppy make sure to stick to a calm yet determined approach and provide plenty of rewards and praise. Cockapoo puppies love to impress and will respond well to being praised for a job well done.
Socializing Cockapoo puppies is also easy as they are naturally outgoing and friendly. It is best to introduce them to new people as soon as they arrive home and before they are ready to take on the outdoors.
As Cockapoos are not fond of being without their owners, training in this aspect becomes essential for their wellbeing as they are prone to separation anxiety. The best way to help your little Cockapoo puppy become independent is to teach him or her that being alone is a situation to enjoy rather than fear. Give your puppy time to learn independence before you leave it alone for the first time. Leave them alone for a few moments and gradually adjust to longer periods as they grow more comfortable with you out of their sight.

History

Cockapoo puppies are one of the most popular doodle breeds in both the United Kingdom and the United States. These cute doodle dogs are originally from the United States where they were first bred at the beginning of 1960. By mixing two very gifted dog breeds like the Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, professional Cockapoo breeders aimed to gift dog lovers with a new type of hypoallergenic, fun-loving dog.

The Cocker spaniel and the Miniature Poodle passed down a myriad of desirable qualities, making the Cockapoo puppy one of the most adored dogs of all time. This new breed enchanted from the get go with its kind personality, adventurous nature, and splendid appearance. These happy Cockapoo puppies are said to be the first designer dogs to have been created. Since its debutant days, the Cockapoo breed has been furthered and is now being bred as multi-generational. The most popular Cockapoo generations are:

  • First-generation Cockapoo that is also known as an F1 Cockapoo. The F1 Cockapoo puppy is the result of crossing a Miniature Poodle with a Cocker spaniel
  • Second-generation Cockapoo that is also known as an F1b Cockapoo. The F1b Cockapoo puppy is the result of back-crossing a Cockapoo (that is an F1) with a Miniature Poodle
  • Third-generation Cockapoo that is also known as an F2 Cockapoo. The F2 Cockapoo puppy is the result of crossing two Cockapoo puppies
