Shih Tzu Grooming

The Shih Tzu grooming needs are sometimes high, given that these dogs often sport long, luxurious coats. With shorter haircuts, their grooming needs become effortless. In cases where the Shih Tzu’s hair is very long, you may want to consider a comb or brush for daily grooming. The Shih Tzu’s coat can be affected by a number of conditions, including old age, stress, fleas and ear mites. Keep your Shih Tzu clean and dry between baths to promote a healthy coat. You may want to try a special shampoo designed specifically for the breed. A regular bath is also important to promote good health, ideally every 4 to 6 weeks. If your Shih Tzu’s coat is matted or tangled, it may be necessary to use a special conditioner to help smooth it out. Shih Tzu's hair can become tangled easily so be sure not to pull them too much or cause any damage to them. 

It is also important to check your Shih Tzu’s ears for bad odor or any sign of infection and clean them with a damp cloth every few days. This is a very simple and inexpensive procedure that will help you keep your dog healthy. Your Shih Tzu, like all dogs, may be susceptible to dental issues. To avoid tartar build-up or gum disease, it is recommended to brush their teeth daily. 

Shih Tzu Exercise Needs

The exercise requirements of a Shih Tzu are generally low. Shih Tzus are good for apartment living, as they have a small frame and a happy-go-lucky personality. They aren't very active, but they do enjoy going on walks. These adorable little dogs typically thrive with an exercise routine that includes one or two daily walks and some indoor games with their owners. They should be exercised for at least 20 minutes each day and given plenty of mental stimulation through games and fun activities.

Shih Tzu Training

Although intelligent and generally obedient, Shih Tzu puppies need some training and socialization. These two can be accomplished through obedience training classes, classroom instruction, and taking part in a variety of activities with other pets. Through obedience training, the puppy learns what behaviors mean and what to do when people ask them to perform a specific action. It is also beneficial to teach your Shih Tzu puppy basic commands such as sit, stay and come. In socialization classes, you’ll learn many things about your dog’s personality and how he interacts with other pets and humans. It helps to know what your dog likes and doesn’t like.  

When training Shih Tzu puppies, short sessions are recommended. Most young puppies have a short attention span and a low ability to focus for long. Prolonged sessions can lead the Shih Tzu to become stubborn, bored, or irritated. Keep training sessions 10 minutes long and provide plenty of fun activities while teaching commands. It is also beneficial to use plenty of different rewards until you identify what your Shih Tzu responds best to. Positive reinforcement goes a long way with Shih Tzus as well.
