This breed originated from Germany and got its named from its work as a water retriever where the word “pudelin” refers to splashing in water. The Toy Poodle was first bred in America in the 20th century, as a city-dwelling companion dog. This breed was also a popular circus dog because of its intelligence and ability to learn tricks. It makes a wonderful family dog and loves to be the center of attention to avoid separation anxiety.
The Toy Poodle is intelligent, sociable, sweet, lively and loyal, especially with its owner. It needs early socialization and consistent training to respect the rules you want it to live by. Unless a Poodle is kept in a short trim, it will need to be brushed daily to keep its coat from matting. This breed is mostly non shedding which makes them the best choice for people with allergies. If kept longer the fine, curly coat will need to be clipped regularly, every six to eight weeks. It is recommended to have a Poodle professionally groomed every four to six weeks.
It is crucial to monitor feeding with a Toy Poodle puppy to avoid hypoglycemia, especially during the first few weeks of life. A high quality dog food is recommended, and dry food to maintain dental care. Poodles are generally healthy but are prone to some health problems such as epilepsy, diabetes, digestive and eyesight problems. It has a long life expectancy of 15 years or more!
